The supplements subreddit aims to discuss and share topics related to nutritional supplementation. This includes new research, potential supplement choices (ie. What should I take? What can replace xxx?), and general discussions on different categories of supplementation. TMG is generally well-tolerated, but side effects such as mild digestive upset or headaches may occur in some people. Primary contraindications are for pregnant or breast-feeding individuals. Talk with your doctor if you have questions or concerns regarding the use of TMG as a part of your supplement protocol. This product is then converted to DMG HCL by adding hydrochloric acid. DMG HCL may be converted to free-form DMG by neutralizing it with an oxide, typically silver oxide. Support of the immune system is one of the most common uses of a DMG HCL supplement. It may also support energy levels, weight management and healthy behavioral patterns. Jun 01, 2013 DMG — When TMG lets go of one of its methyl groups, it deposits a substance called dimethylglycine or DMG. This is a B-complex vitamin and is used to improve speech and behavior in autism, for attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), epilepsy and neurological function. Autism is a developmental disorder for which its etiology is not well understood. It has been described as being a complex behavioral and neurological disorder in which impaired communication and lack of social skills are the hallmarks of the condition. Photo galleries: now with captions and links free.

The disorder has been possibly linked to genetic, neurological, gastrointestinal and immunological defects as well as to environmental toxins such as mercury and chlorinated hydrocarbons.

A 2018 study (1) demonstrated that children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have increased inflammation and significant differences in their immune system and GI microbiota profiles as compared to the non ASD population. According to a recent study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, impairment of methylation and detoxification pathways have also been a factor for many with ASD.

Autism is a growing problem for which no single treatment program has been found to be totally successful. Many people with ASD appear to have their own unique set of symptoms. The best approach to help remediate the condition seems to center on developing a personal comprehensive program based on multiple factors including dietary changes, nutritional supplements, detoxification, GI support and the use of behavior modification programs.

Recent studies have been shown that DMG may have beneficial effects on autistic individuals.

A longtime advocate for the use of DMG for those individuals on the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been Bernard Rimland, PhD, the founder and past president of the Autism Research Institute in San Diego. Although Dr. Rimland passed away in 2006, he's keenly remembered for his dedicated life's work to find the causes and solution to the autism puzzle.

Dr. Rimland was the first researcher to bring the attention to the autistic community as to the potential benefits of DMG in helping to improve and alleviate the symptoms and abnormalities associated with autism.

He discovered earlier findings by Russian investigators who reported speech improvement in speech handicapped children who were given a product containing DMG. Since 1980, he has recommended to parents with autistic children that they try DMG to see if the nutrient would help improve their child's communication issues.(2)

The feedback from parents to Dr. Rimland's Treatment Effectiveness Questionnaire over the next few years was excellent. Many parents and teachers reported significant improvement in a number of areas after starting to use DMG including:

  • Improved speech communication
  • Better social skills
  • Better eye contact
  • Improved quality of sleep
  • Positive behavioral improvement

Over a period of time, Dr. Rimland collected over 6,000 survey reports in which 42% of the parents rated DMG as offering a beneficial result to their children. Based on the complexity of the disorder, this is a highly favorable report with only 8% reporting a less favorable result.

Dmg Supplement Vs Tmg

Dr. Rimland reported that if DMG is going to work, in most cases, parents should see a change within a week or two but advises parents should try it for at least a month before discontinuing use.

Two large studies have reported the benefits of DMG for autism.

Supplement

Dr. Lee Dae Kun, Director of the Pusan (Korea) Research Center on Child Problems reported to Dr. Rimland that he observed an 80% improvement in a group of 39 autistic children, ages three to seven, who were given DMG over a three-month period.

He observed improved speech communication, dietary choices, cooperation, sleeping patterns and bathroom habits. The parents reported that they clearly saw improvement in their children. Dr. Kun concluded that DMG can be beneficial for children with autism, even if it is not a cure.

In a second study, Doctors Jung and Lee of the Springtide Foundation in Taipei, Taiwan published a double blind study of DMG in 84 autistic children in the Tzu Chi Medical Journal in 2000. The research showed short time and from mild to moderate effectiveness of the DMG with children with autism. The DMG group showed significant improvement in irritability, lethargy, hyperactivity and inappropriate speech.(3)

The reasons why DMG brings about improvement in autistic children is not clearly known but it may be due to DMG's support of methylation, immune response, detoxification and gut health.

DMG can also make a positive contribution in many areas of cellular metabolism including neurotransmitter production, oxidative stress reduction and energy production in the brain. Perhaps future research in this very important field will shed more light on why DMG can benefit the lives of many children with autism.

The following is a small sample of the letters Dr. Rimland received over the years.

Dear Dr. Rimland,

In December of last year, my husband and I began our son on DMG. Matt was four years old and non- verbal for the most part. Two to three weeks later he began to babble, and then use jargon. After 2 months, he began to make many word attempts and by June was speaking words. Today he speaks well over 200 words and many are two word phrases.

When I tell people about DMG, they ask 'do you think that DMG did all of this?' I reply that I think it really helped. It's cheap, very easy to get and administer and is a nutrient that can't hurt. It may not work with your child, but is worth trying.

Hurray for DMG! Our 14-year-old daughter, who has ADD and is hyperactive with strong autistic tendencies, recently started taking DMG and within two days we were noticing some major changes in her behavior. She had a greatly reduced frustration level and her teenage hostility and /or oppositional behavior has diminished considerably. Homework is now a pleasant experience and her organization skills have increased. The bottom line: she is a much happier person.

To develop the supplemental form, the act of processing sucrose (sugar) from sugar beets yields glycine betaine as a byproduct. However, in our bodies TMG is obtained by the oxidation of choline. This means in addition to beets, many choline-containing foods, like spinach, quinoa, eggs, liver, and shellfish allow for increased TMG levels within the body.

Once inside the body, TMG has two main functions. The first is that of an 'osmolyte.' This means it plays a crucial role in cellular osmosis, or maintaining cellular volume and fluid balance. Its osmolytic role is similar to that of creatine, and means that higher cellular concentrations of TMG can help preserve the integrity of the cell structure and make it more resilient to stress.

The osmolytic properties of TMG can be of particular benefit to those on a ketogenic, or very-low-carb, diet. As an individual lowers their carbohydrate levels, their body begins to expel water rapidly. This affects the electrolyte balance in the body and is one reason why keto followers should supplement with additional magnesium, potassium, and sodium. Keeping TMG in your supplement stock can assist in your hydration attempts, as well.

The second function TMG performs in the body is that of a methyl group donor in both creatine synthesis, as well as homocysteine converting to methionine. Some studies have shown TMG to lower plasma levels of homocysteine. It apparently does so by reducing homocysteine into L-methionine or by increasing levels of S-Adenosyl Methionine (aka SAMe) and folate.

By increasing [easyazon_link keywords='SAMe' locale='US' tag='dmgbiz-20″]SAMe[/easyazon_link] and folate levels, TMG is able to indirectly support whole-body methylation. This may be particularly important as elevated homocysteine levels are known to lead to blood vessel inflammation and possibly heart disease, which is obviously not a desirable trait.

Convinced that TMG is for you? [easyazon_link keywords='TMG Supplement' locale='US' tag='dmgbiz-20″]Here's our list of the best TMG on the market today.[/easyazon_link]

Bodybuilding, Endurance and Muscular Growth: TMG has come into the limelight as a possible performance-enhancing compound. Some studies show that a dose of 1.25g, taken twice daily, has been shown to increase power output, as well as supply minor increases in workout volume and endurance. Recent studies have shown the following:

  • Weight-trained athletes increased muscle strength and power.
  • Supplementation increased markers of protein synthesis vs placebo.
  • Enhanced endurance: more bench press reps, prolonged sprint capacity, and more cycling power.
  • Increased GH and IGF-1 levels, with decreased cortisol.
  • Increased muscle mass, arm size, and lowered belly fat.

Liver Health: TMG might have protective effects on the liver as it has shown to impede fatty liver deposits in animal studies. Fatty liver generally happens in people who have diabetes, obesity and drink excessive amounts of alcohol. Therefore people that have those issues might want to look into TMG as a supplement.

Autism: People with Autism generally have a few bio-markers that are impaired, generally they are methyalation, gluathione, and oxidative stress. TMG combined with folinic acid and vitamin methyl-B12 have showed positive results on those bio-markers. Thus TMG might be a promising supplement with Autism, although some other studies have disagreed with this.

Depression: In a very limited study (46 People) [easyazon_link keywords='TMG with SAM-e' locale='US' tag='dmgbiz-20″]TMG combined with SAM-e[/easyazon_link] showed minor effects on people with mild to moderate depression who didn't respond to traditional therapy.

Prevent Blood Clots and Atherosclerosis: High levels of homocysteine is associated with blood clots and hardening of the arteries. TMG has shown to regulate homocysteine levels. Supplementing with 6g/day of TMG lowers homiocysteine levels by 5% to 20%.

Dmg Supplement Vs Tmg Benefits

Recommended Dosage: A standardized dose would be in the 2.5-6g range, two times daily. It does not appear that food needs to be present for proper absorption. This is the proper range to reduce homocysteine levels. It also seems to be the range where performance benefits were noted, but have yet to be replicated.

Homocysteine Dosage: For those interested, taking TMG daily at levels of 3g or higher has shown to effectively and reliably reduce homocysteine levels by as little as 10% in those with normal levels and up to 20-40% in those with elevated levels.

Dosage for Liver Dosage: Betaine may have a role in treating fatty liver disease. Although more research is needed, preliminary evidence shows that high doses (20g daily) may prove successful in the future.

Dosage with Choline: levels of TMG in the blood are similar when obtained through 1g of betaine and 1g of choline. Taking choline is scientifically-proven to provide other nervous system benefits during workouts, and is currently more affordable.

Dmg Supplement Vs Tmg Health

Lowest active dose: The lowest active dose for TMG to be of any use is 500mg taken periodically throughout the day,. Eating foods like quinoa (630), spinach (577) wheat bran (360) and beet root (256) will supply a good amount of TMG (#'s = TMG mg/100g of food item).

Taking high dosages of TMG can possibly cause fishy odors on the breath or in sweat and urine. However, if you feel the need to supplement with TMG and notice the fishy smell, [easyazon_link keywords='riboflavin' locale='US' tag='dmgbiz-20″]supplementing with riboflavin at 100mg twice a day may get rid of the smell.[/easyazon_link] Another minor side effect that TMG can cause is heart burn.

I would say, yes, while the evidence is somewhat lacking for its supposed performance-boosting properties, its osmolytic and methylation benefits still make TMG a viable product. The simple act of ensuring our cells are properly hydrated helps to protect them from unnecessary trauma or degradation. Perhaps this is where the performance-enhancing effects have been noted. I would say TMG is a a certain addition to any full-force supplement routine, especially for those following [easyazon_link keywords='Ketogenic' locale='US' tag='dmgbiz-20″]Ketogenic[/easyazon_link] or [easyazon_link keywords='VLC diet' locale='US' tag='dmgbiz-20″]VLC diets.[/easyazon_link]
